Star Wars: The Old Republic publicity stunt goes awesome
There’s been a lot of who-do about Star Wars in the past few months. Ever since the announcement that Disney had acquired the rights to the decades-old franchise back in November, people worldwide have been expressing an opinion on everything from the director (J.J. Abrams), the cast (original vs. recast?) and spin-offs (solo Yoda/Mace Windu movies?) – even we gave you a run down - and despite the proposed release date being a long way off (2015), we don’t see the discussion slacking between now and then.
So somewhat topically, although it’s over a year old, I saw this the other day and thought it was pretty damn cool. Then again, I am a massive Star Wars nerd, so that skews my judgement somewhat. Tell me if I’m just being a dork.
Picture the scene: you’re in the world-famous Times Square in New York City. You’re minding your own business – maybe taking a picture or dozen – when suddenly THIS guy walks through the crowd with a posse of Sith homies.
Aw shit. Then from the other direction come a bunch of Jedi dudes. The people around you are similarly “WTF”. They all draw their lightsabers and go into gnarly fight poses…
…and then some of the crowd whip out ‘sabers and join in. Oh boy. Nerdgasm.
Hyperbole aside, this was definitely a cool stunt. It was to market the release of Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMORPG released a while back, and for the people that saw it, definitely a talking point of the day!
