Portal protagonist meets Half-Life hero

Chell Portal Gordon Freeman Half-Life

I don’t think there are many gamers out there who aren’t at least appreciative of Valve – the consumer-friendly creators of games like Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Portal and possibly above all, sci-fi shooter Half-Life – and there’s something unique or innovative about pretty much every property they’ve touched, and along with their hugely popular games distribution application Steam, they’ve got themselves a legion of fans as a result. Indeed, company founder and face Gabe Newell (Gaben) is an indelible part of internet culture, with a legion of memes predicting his rise as saviour in desperate times.

Anyway, it’s these last two titles that have been melded – realistically, as they do both exist within the same universe – in this fan-produced short film. It sees Chell, the silent protagonist and ‘test-subject’ of Portal and Portal 2, finally escaping with her portal gun, into an area outside City 17, the setting for shooter genre classic Half-Life 2.

Created by YouTube user Timtimfed (real name Michael Shanks) and released in October last year, it’s incredibly impressive, especially given that it was created on a shoestring budget. The effects are excellent as such, and the firefight that ensues makes good use of the two series’ iconic guns: Chell’s ‘portal gun’ and Freeman’s physics-manipulating ‘gravity gun’.
