Scope for original Star Wars cast, but with a younger trio of lead characters as well
I tend to keep quiet on a lot of film news as it’s not really my area of expertise, but Star Wars is, and so when anything concrete comes up I feel honour bound to talk about it. Star Wars has been a big part of my life since I was a kid, and despite reservations in many sectors, I can’t help but be excited by the forthcoming third trilogy.
Screen Rant reported yesterday a particularly interesting tidbit regarding where the closely-guarded story is going. All involved have been fairly tight lipped, but apparently Disney CEO Bob Iger – via someone called Ben Fritz – revealed at a shareholders meeting that the new trilogy will take place 30 years post-Return Of The Jedi.
Star Wars Episode VII will take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi, Iger says. “Very familiar faces” along with trio of young leads

This narrows down the possibilities of what to expect massively, but paired with the news that there will be “a trio of young leads” (along with the unofficially but basically dead cert appearances of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford), we can say with certainty that those three characters will be Han and Leia’s twin children Jacen and Jaina, and Luke’s young son Benjamin.
Whilst we’ve been warned not to expect anything specific from the Expanded Universe (of which there is a lot), Screen Rant speculates that at 30 years that puts the new generation of a good age (the solos at 25 at least, and Ben at 7 or 8, although “30 years” could be 30+), and timeline events squarely past the Yuuzhan Vong invasion and into the realms of the violent and devastating Swarm War – a war which a darkening Jacen causes. This would of course mean that the Solos’ third child Anakin would already be dead, casting a further pall over the story.
I like this whole idea a lot. It puts us right in medias res, so we can get right into the story without needing to watch young Jedi grow up again – one of the many painful problems with Episodes I – III and Anakin Skywalker. It would also be quite tragic, with the fall of Jacen and the hardships that would face the original trio of leads as such.
Shooting is due to commence in only a couple of months in the UK, and hopefully we’ll get more details soon! Disney have a great record with the Marvel films, so don’t write this off at all, okay?
