Important news: drop everything now and listen to the new Godspeed You! Black Emperor album
Stop. The. Fucking. Press.
No seriously, stop it. Whatever you’re doing, put it down, put it away, wash your god-damn hands and sit the fuck down. Or up. I’m even not sure right now.
You may have read a few weeks ago when I got entirely too excited for my own good over an excerpt of the forthcoming Godspeed You! Black Emperor album Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress – a track called “Peasantry or ‘Light! Inside of Light!“. Multiply that excitement by at least thirty seven and you’ll be somewhere close to how happy I am that Constellation Records have today put up a stream of the entire album. I’ll say no more before pointing you in its direction:
Although separated into 4 tracks, it’s actually just one long 40-minute piece; the fuzz that purrs “Peasantry…” into “Lamb’s Breath” or the seamless divide between “Asunder, Sweet” and the mysterious and evocative “Piss Crowns Are Trebled” are consequential in no way from any other passage on the record in that you’d not be able to tell they marked a new ‘song’ unless you knew.
This is something the band haven’t done since their early days, but it’s certainly less meandering – or perhaps ponderous – than those records. At 40ish minutes, you can spaff this one out on your lunch break and head back to work for an afternoon of drifting melancholy. Or hold your calls and have at it like you’ve bought her for the night, see if I care. I know what I’m doing for the next few hours.
Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress is out March 31st via long-term partners Constellation Records, which is only a week today. You can pre-order from them here. Tra la la, motherfuckers.
