Snatch at the failing remnants of winter with Minsk’s crushing new album
As we break out into spring – as the days get longer, the sun warmer and the trees greener – you forget how utterly despairing the darker genres can be sometimes. It’s been a while since we’ve had a really sombre post-metal twitch our ears, but Illinois’ own Minsk are seeking to remind us of the colder months with their new album The Crash & The Draw, which is out this week.
As is customary, there’s a full stream of the record, courtesy of Decibel; 76 minutes of brow-beating, lung-crushing sludge and miasma.
Lead single “The Garish Remembrance Of Failure” is a particular highlight, as is the eleven-second scream the bridges “Within And Without” into “Onward Procession I: These Longest Of Days“. Their sonic palette touches on bands like Neurosis later on, recalling their quiet but insistent melancholy, as well as soothing ambient tones on “Conjunction” and “The Way Is Through“. It’s a well-trodden light/dark set-up, all in service of setting up the titanic waves of sound, but it’s very well executed and certainly worth a look.
