Liberation or the same old voice? Refused’s Freedom is available to stream

Refused - Freedom album art

As the decade of comebacks rolls on, we’ve become more and more accustomed to bands of a certain age or older returning with either reunions and/or new albums. Just last month we saw a successful return for Faith No More after 17 years. Last year we had Pink FloydFinch, and before that Black Sabbath amongst many others.

2012 saw the return of one of my personal favourites – Swedish hardcore punk legends Refused – but as the reunion wore on, I became less and less enthused. My viewpoint boils down to a very narrow view of their own punk ethics, rather than the music itself but they’re back and I’ve made my peace with that.

A few months ago they announced, as rumoured, that they had recorded a brand new album called Freedom. It’s out next week, and surprise surprise, it’s now up for streaming via various official channels. This is probably the easiest way to hear it in full:

I promised myself that I would go in with a completely open mind (sans the opinions I’ve already formed on previously released songs “Elektra“, Françafrique and Dawkins Christ, which make up three of the first four tracks), and honestly I’m sort of enjoying myself so far. Even “Françafrique” is annoyingly catchy, but separating my politics from it is an interesting experience.

Look out for a proper review at some point in the near future, but for now, please let us know your thoughts in the comments.
