MONO guitarist Takaakira ‘Taka’ Goto presents his debut solo album

Taka Goto - Classical Punk And Echoes Under The Beauty album art

Takaakira ‘Taka’ Goto – best known as the guitarist for well-respected Japanese post-rock band MONO – crafted an album over a decade ago that has never seen the light of day. MONO have been going since 1999 and have produced over sixteen records in one format or another, so he’s hardly been starving anyone of output, but nevertheless, this seems odd.

Nevertheless, and despite composing music for two films – 2007′s Snow Angels and 2008′s All God’s Children Can Dance - Classical Punk And Echoes Under The Beauty is Taka’s first solo album. First recorded in 2003, the album wasn’t even meant to see the light of day originally, as he says himself in the album’s press release:

I wasn’t actually thinking about sharing this album with anyone at the time. It didn’t sound like MONO, so I left it as a trail to my envisioned world, as my personal collection.

We’re glad it has though. The title is very apt; the record cuts a fine balance between passionate and composed classical music, but undercut by a certain punk brashness and charm. As with much post-rock, there’s a heady mixture of textures with strings and pianos combining with more standard rock instrumentation to create something quite different from MONO’s output.

You can stream the whole album below, which is quite a lovely proposition for your Thursday evening, let me tell you.

Classical Punk And Echoes Under The Beauty is officially released tomorrow, April 24th via Pelagic Records, who also released MONO‘s double album The Last Dawn/Rays Of Darkness late last year. MONO themselves are currently on tour across Europe in support of those records, with dates as follows. If you’re going, you’ll be able to pick up a copy of this fantastic outing too.
