Avantasia Are Set To Release Yet Another Power Metal Epic
Avantasia are a symphonic power metal project helmed by Tobias Sammet, also hailing from legendary power metallers Edguy. Sammet enlists multiple vocalists, including Alice Cooper, Michael Kiske, Jorn Lande, Russell Allen, Klaus Mien, and Tim “Ripper” Owens to help record his albums, which are sprawling concept pieces with the story often spanning two or three albums. His last work was a trilogy, which concluded in 2010 with the dual release of The Wicked Symphony and Angel of Babylon albums.
Last Wednesday a teaser for the new Avantasia saga Mystery of Time (the art for which is at the top of this post) was released, featuring about four minutes of new music in various clips, and showcasing the various singers that will be present on the album – including Michael Kiske (Ex-Helloween), Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Star One), Joe Lynn Turner (ex-Deep Purple, ex-Rainbow), Biff Byford (Saxon), and Eric Martin (Mr Big) among others. Additionally, the album will make ample use of the mighty German Filmorchestra Babelsberg, which should generate more than enough bombast and gravitas to this power metal endeavour. In fact, the addition of such an expansive and prestigious orchestra will only serve to enhance that epic factor that every great power metal album should have in strong supply.
The clips teased below reveal a sound far more ambitious than anything Sammet and Avantasia have attempted before. It’s very encouraging to see a veteran like Sammet still striving to push himself out of his well established comfort zone and deliver something new and engaging every time. He could just as easily rest on his laurels and the name that he has built for himself, but instead he is trying to innovate and break new ground which is incredibly commendable. The symphony sounds fantastic, and there seems to be quite a wide variety present in the songwriting techniques and styles. Sammet has always been an excellent musician, and has a knack for writing catchy, uplifting melodies and that trend seems to continues here, but implemented in new and ambitious ways. .
The Mystery of Time will be out on Nuclear Blast Records on March 29th
