We’re going to try something new this year. As a collaborative effort, The Monolith staff will run down around 15 or so of their favourite albums released each month and present them to you, as a list, with words and pictures and music. It will be much like a lecture at the university of awesome, only you don’t have to look at us or make notes really. Best school ever.
Here’s January’s list, starting with:
Angra – The Secret Garden
Could 2015 be one of the finest years for power metal? Right off the bat we have Blind Guardian, joined by Brazilian powerhouse Angra releasing a fantastic album.
The Secret Garden is a heavy, speedy metal album garnished with kickass melodies and a sense of grandeur that could only come from Angra. Their vague progressive power metal leanings are apparent throughout, and their technical prowess is as on display as ever.
The album also takes advantage of some great guest vocalists, including ex-Warlock frontwoman Doro Pesch and Simone Simons of Epica. This is also the first outing for new vocalist Fabio Leone (also of Rhapsody of Fire) after joining the band in 2013, and he sounds utterly fantastic: never do you get the impression you’re listening to his other band; he works his voice perfecetly for Angra.
