As a collaborative effort, The Monolith staff run down their favourite albums released each month and present them to you, as a list, with words and pictures and music. It’s much like a lecture at the university of awesome, only you don’t have to look at us or make notes really. Best school ever.
Here’s July’s list, starting with:
Between the Buried and Me - Coma Ecliptic
When Between The Buried And Me announced that the follow-up to their critically acclaimed Parallax II: The Future Sequence would be a “rock opera” of sorts, I’m sure many people thought the same thing as I did: “Isn’t that basically what they’ve been doing for the last couple of albums?” At the same time, I had a lingering suspicion what this announcement was actually hinting towards more prog, more clean singing, fewer chugs, and less screaming.
It turns out that lingering suspicion was entirely accurate. This doesn’t mean BTBAM have pulled an Opeth and gone full Heritage on us – we still have Tommy’s screams, Dustie and Paul’s technical and heavy riffs and Blake and Dan’s roaring rhythm section providing ample opportunity to slam and groove – but they are mostly in a supporting role when compared to previous outings. The songs vary, as is tradition, ranging from the shreddy riffing of “Famine Wolf” – a song which could have been part of any of BTBAM’s more recent albums – to “The Ectopic Stroll”, a sonic sequel to the great “Bloom” from Parallax II, and “Dim Ignition”, which would sound at home in Tommy’s solo material.
The songs are also incredibly catchy at times; I’m not sure “Coma Machine” has been veered far from my subconscious since my first listen. The album doesn’t have quite the triumphant and epic finish Between The Buried And Me tend to achieve – the final few songs are no “White Walls” or “Silent Flight Parliament” – but Coma Ecliptic is still another fantastic album, and as a fan for just over a decade I honestly can’t wait to see where they go next.
