Hell yes! Emperor are back baby! Will headline Wacken 2014
We woke up this morning to what might be some of the best news we have seen in a while; the mighty Emperor are reuniting! OR rather, they will in 2014, to headline Wacken Open Air. No other dates have been announced yet, but Metal Hammer reports that more dates will follow very soon. The reunion was announced by Ihsahn and Samoth at a Wacken press conference this morning.
This is not something I though I would ever get to see. Emperor disbanded in 2001 after their swansong album, Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise, and though they had a brief surprise reunion in 2005 to 2007, it looked like they wouldn’t do anything more, what with Ihsahn’s solo career success. In 2012, the man even stated that there would not likely be anymore Emperor reunions, but now on this most joyous of days, the unlikely has become a reality.
The black wizards Emperor are one of the leading bands from the Norwegian 90′s black metal scene. They managed to avoid the infamy of Mayhem and Burzum despite the fact that original drummer Faust killed a man in a forest. However, they released some of the finest black metal of all time with both their debut In the Nightside Eclipse and my personal favourite Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk. Their next two albums veered into more progressive and experimental territory, but are still just as great.
Those hoping for a new Emperor album this time around will be disappointed though. It will feature only live shows. For what it’s worth though, how many times have we seen a band say something like that only to realize they want to make a new album anyways? It tends to happen quite a bit. their live lineup will also likely include a familiar face in the form of Einar Solberg, of the progressive metal band Leprous, on keyboards and backing vocals.
Here’s hoping they tour and that it is a big one. If they come to Vancouver, you can bet I’ll be there.
