Dark Tranquility Have Amicably Parted Ways With Their Bassist – Is This Becoming An Epidemic?

Dark Tranquility Daniel Antonsson

This news passed me by last week, but it seems that as the legendary fathers of Swedish melodic death metal, Dark Tranquility are preparing to enter the studio to record their impending 10th album, Construct, they’ve parted ways with their BASSIST of all people. Yes, recently Machine Head, The Ocean and now, Dark Tranquility are all having trouble keeping a hold of low end rumbling wizards. If this continues it’s going to become an epidemic!

This split seems rather amicable though, with Daniel Antonsson explaining that he wants to pursue his own musical endeavours. It turns out that Antonsson’s primary instrument of choice is the guitar, and he felt that playing bass for Dark Tranquility was starting to interfere with his main passion. That’s certainly understandable and the statements from both the band and Daniel certainly seem a lot warmer and more mutual than that of say, Machine Head.

Ultimately, Antonsson has chosen to follow his heart and focus on playing guitar in his various musical endeavours whilst also spending more time working on the production side of things at his own musical studio aptly titled Gothenburg Rock Studios and The Monolith, as well as the band wish him well.

Antonsson has been with Dark Tranquility for five years, although only appearing on one album, their previous release in 2010 entitled We Are The Void. He currently plays guitar with his main project Dimension Zero, another Swedish melodic death metal band comprised of members from In Flames, Marduk and Diabolique.

Here’s his statement:

“I want to thank the guys in DARK TRANQUILLITY and the amazing D.T. fans around the world for the last four years of touring around the globe! It´s been awesome! Also a huge hug to the DT crew and all of the people working with us. I will miss you all very much! You are like family to me and I hope we will meet again soon!

But…now is the time for me to follow my heart and again focus on my guitar playing and being a recording engineer/producer in my studio, Gothenburg Rock Studios. We will meet again on the road or in the studio – that’s for sure!

Horns up and Cheerz!”

No word on a replacement bassist has been released yet. Dark Tranquility’s new album, Construct will be released on May 27th in Europe and May 28th in North America via Century Media Records.
