Saturday marked eight years since the death of ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbot, highly-regarded Pantera and Damageplan guitarist. He was shot whilst on-stage at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. Details are readily available regarding the culprit and suspected motives, but what remains is a lasting legacy of one of his era’s most famous metal musicians, and an icon of the time.

There have been dozens of tributes, covers, lyrics and organisations set up in his memory over the years, and this year’s anniversary saw a number of bands pay their respects to him in different ways.

Firstly, Machine Head played Pantera’s “Fucking Hostile” at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA – a somewhat lo-fi version of which is below.

Pertinently, Dimebag’s older brother Vinnie is drummer for Hellyeah, who are currently on tour supporting Lamb Of God with In Flames and Sylosis. The latter covered “Strength Beyond Strength” at the show:

Collectively, members of all of the bands on the tour raised a glass of Black Tooth Grin (a concoction consisting of a large shot of seagrams 7, a large shot of crown royal, and a splash of cola) on stage, which was also recorded. There’s a photo floating around where I believe I can see Alex Bailey holding two of them, which sounds about right.
