One of Europe’s premier travelling heavy music events, Impericon Festival 2016 hits UK shores this bank holiday weekend with the likes of Hatebreed, Emmure, Despised Icon and Heart Of A Coward.

Right near the top of the bill will be Aussies Northlane, and guitarist Josh Smith was kind enough to answer a few questions in the lead up.

Northlane 2015
So you’re playing Impericon Festival this year. What does the brand mean to you?

Impericon is Europe. The first time we came over it was for the Never Say Die tour, we’ve done a lot of videos with the Impericon dudes and girls, made a lot of friends and even did a listening session for Node at their headquarters in Leipzig.

Is this your first time playing the festival? What do you expect from it?

We have done one Impericon fest before, never the whole tour. I can’t wait for it. It’s going to be big, and it’s going to be crazy.

What’s your standout memory?

We had a longer set length than we had planned for, so we went up and played a song we hadn’t played in over a year without practicing it, in front of about 7000 people. Kind of sketchy, kind of nerve-wracking but it went just fine.

Which of the shows are you playing as part of Impericon Festival?

All of them!

Impericon is a travelling festival hitting different cities across the UK and Europe, do you see this as a good setup for festivals of the future?

Absolutely, travelling festivals are quite common in Australia and we really enjoy doing them.

Are there any bands performing with you that you’ve played with before? Who are you looking forward to checking out?

Well Hellions are some of our best mates so you can bet I’ll be hanging with them. I’m really looking forward to seeing Despised Icon on stage, and also haven’t seen Hatebreed play in years so that’s exciting or me too. Also S/O to Hundredth.

For those who are seeing you for the first time at Impericon Festival, what can they expect from your live show?

Expect nothing, experience everything.

In a festival environment do you focus on your older hits or do you find it’s a good opportunity to promote new material too?

We like to just play a bit of everything!

Thanks for taking the time to chat to us, do you have any final words?

See you soon UK/Europe!

Northlane will appear at both UK dates of Impericon Festival 2016 – Monday May 2nd at Manchester Academy 1 and Tuesday May 3rd at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town – as well.
