Vancouver’s newest event Covenant Festival is looking tasty

Covenant Festival

North America gets a bit short changed on the festival front most of the time. Recently that has started to change, however; Maryland Deathfest is one of the biggest in the world now, and Heavy MTL has been growing as well. Despite Noctis Festival no longer operating after an incredible final year, there is still hope for others – for example, my home city of Vancouver will play host to Covenant Festival this June – hopefully the first of many.

A full scale evolution from our inner circle’s infamous vinyl nights. The beginnings of a yearly tradition of housing the harshest black/death metal and finest neofolk/dark ambient. A proper gathering of Death’s music.

The festival was announced some while back, but yesterday the full lineup was unveiled:

Rites of Thy Degringolade (Black/Death Metal)
Weregoat (Black Metal)
Ritual Necromancy (Death Metal)
Mitochondrion (Death Metal)
Auroch (Death Metal
Garroting Deep (Black Metal)
Dire Omen (Black/Death Metal)
Spell (Heavy Metal)
Funeral Circle (Doom Metal)
Night Profound (Dark Neofolk)
Scythe Bearer (Dark Ambient)
Deathwinds (Black/Death Metal)

As you can clearly see, it’s a festival largely aimed towards black metal, death metal, heavy metal, and the ritual ambient and folk genres. Mitochondrion are always a treat live and the presence of bands such as Rites of Thy Degringolade playing their first show in 10 years, Ritual Necromancy and Weregoat making their first Canadian appearances, and the return of epic doom masters Funeral Circle make this a very special weekend. As The Monolith’s resident self-proclaimed “trve kvlt one”, I will of course be attending this.

There are still more details to be announced, such as the lineups for each day, ticket prices, etc, but for all intents and purposes, this festival is set.

Covenant Festival will run from June 11th to the 13th.
