Combining our site’s two primary foci in one neat package comes the news that Georgian megalodons Mastodon are writing and recording a song for the forthcoming Monsters Inc. prequel, Monsters University.

Announced via a Facebook post earlier today, it gave no more detail than that, but the band do have previous experience contributing to the moving pictures, having contributed a song to Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters called ”Cut You Up with a Linoleum Knife“, and an EP for the somewhat misguided Jonah Hex movie.

The 3D movie from animasters Pixar, which is still about half a year away (slated for a June 21st release), will focus on the ‘early years’ of Monsters Inc. stars James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Michael “Mike” Wazowski – in their university years, as the title suggest. It’s pretty hotly anticipated, as Monsters Inc. was very highly regarded when it was first released over a decade ago, and a whole generation of kids who saw it are now likely in university themselves.

John Goodman and Billy Crystal will reprise their roles as the above mentioned Sully and Mike, as well as Steve Buscemi as their nemesis Randall Boggs, and a swathe of other big names including Kelsey Grammer, Frank Oz and John Ratzenberger.

Mastodon are also well entrenched in writing for their follow up to 2011′s The Hunter, and could enter the studio as soon as January. They’ve never been an album-a-year kind of band, so more of their renowned heavy touring schedule could be in the works, but then again, it’s almost 2013, so who knows!
