Devil Sold His Soul’s first release with new vocalist due this autumn

It was a real pleasure to see British ambient metal masters Devil Sold His Soul last month at Tech Fest. It had been a while, and since bringing in new vocalist Paul Green (also of The Arusha Accord) I’ve noticed several of my colleagues taking more of an interest too – Simon’s ears in particular pricked up, as he said in his live report from the festival.

Since taking the reins, Paul and the existing five members of the band have only put out one track as a teaser – the excellent “Time in October last year – but in speaking to Basick Records label head Nathan Phillips recently, I learned that a more complete release was on the cards.

Today sees the announcement of that, with word now out of a five-track EP called Belong ╪ Betray, following in the grand tradition of funny symbols in music like Born Of Osiris‘ Tomorrow We Die ∆live and the artist formerly known as Prince‘s prince. We’re not actually sure what “╪” means – and by that we mean nothing comes up when you Google it – but it’s not really that important.

Including “Time“, the track list will look like this:

01. Devastator
02. Time
03. Unveiled
04. ╪
05. Alive

Green said in the official press release:

“I’m absolutely stoked to get this record out there. Each song on this record is a huge part of me & something I’m immensely proud to put out. The band itself has been through a massive transition period since I joined last April and this represents a journey for us all. It’s been a tough time but hopefully the start of something great.”

Interestingly, there’ll be no CD-only release; digital or vinyl + CD are the options, so you’ll have a lovely physical package if that’s your thing, whether you want it or not.

Belong ╪ Betray will be out November 17th through Basick Records, and will mark just over two years since the band’s last album, Empire Of Light. As always, it was recorded, mixed and produced by guitarist Jonny Renshaw at Bandit Studios.

They will also be playing The Underworld, Camden on Friday 3rd October by way of early celebration. I’ll see you there.
