Ensiferum release new video for “One Man Army”

Ensiferum One Man Army

Ah there’s nothing quite like a good bit of folk metal, is there? It’s fun, catchy, and oh so melodic. Ensiferum are part of the old guard of the genre – starting with their self-titled, they’ve been one of the pioneers of Scandinavian folk metal, weathering losing creative force Jari Mäenpää to his then-side-project Wintersun in 2004, which is kind of funny because in the time since he left, Wintersun has released exactly one album, whereas Ensiferum have released three – soon to be four, as One Man Army drops next month.

And lo and behold, the title track for the song has appeared on the YouTubes, along with a music video. Take a look:

The video cuts between the band playing, and some stuff happening in a snowy forest. There’s some fire, and a mystical looking woman in a robe. It’s pretty much what you would expect from the folk metal masters.

The song is also exactly what one would expect – that being, “damn, Ensiferum is pretty fucking awesome!” It’s a fast, driving song that sounds more or less like everything else they’ve done. I do detect a note of strings in the background though, and that is new. The chorus is also really fucking sweet, using epic choral arrangements along with the growled lines.

Aside from those slightly new elements, this is pretty standard Ensiferum. The band was my introduction to folk metal back when I was a wee lad of fifteen, and I have a soft spot for them, so I can certainly tolerate “just standard Ensiferum” from them. It would be nice if they were to do something more daring, but they’re at the point in their careers where they don’t really need to. And the chanted choral lines are too fucking awe-inspiring to ignore.

One Man Army comes out on February 20th via Metal Blade Records. Ensiferum’s 2015 is already looking quite packed – they’re playing 70,000 Tons Of Metal next week, followed by a few select dates in their native Finland before heading on a fairly extensive European tour with Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum before festival season starts in earnest.
