Hold on to your innards; Code Orange are back and pissed

Code Orange I Am King video screencap

And when I say pissed, I don’t mean “beating you up after school” kinda pissed; I mean dragging you out to the back woods and sacrificing your mortal vessel to the devil kinda pissed.

The last time I was this perturbed by something musical, I was actually standing in the same room as this band, but it was not them. Code Orange, who used to go by Code Orange Kids, played a show with fellow U.S. noise mongrels Full Of Hell, who were nothing short of scary. Filled with a sort of seething malevolence, MD/PA quartet held the room under some kind of dark magic for 40 minutes, and everyone left feeling a little bit uncomfortable I’m sure.

It seems that in their newer, more mature guise, this group of Pittsburghian youngsters have taken a leaf from Full Of Hell’s book, and are doing their own creepy, Satan-worshipping kind of thing. We sort of got wind of this back in March, when they began a mysterious campaign with the handle ‘thinners of the herd’, but with the recent name change and today’s brand new track “I Am King” – their forthcoming album’s title track – we now know a bit more about what this means. Check it out:

Out with the old. In with the new.

This is a pretty big change. Their debut Love Is Love//Return To Dust was fantastic, as was the split with Tigers Jaw, The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die and Self Defense Family, but this is a brave move. The track seeths with malice, cuts all over the place, and explores much darker hardcore territory than their previous work – but I’m totally down with this. Give us more ASAP please.
