Get Graceful with The Contortionist’s new video
One of my favourite releases of 2014, The Contortionist‘s Language is a record of quiet beauty with reserved, delicate prog sensibilities – far removed from their deathcore leanings of previous records Exoplanet and Intrinsic. They released a video in the run-up to its September release for “Language I: Intuition“ that matched the organic quality of the song – and indeed the album as a whole – but the band haven’t been resting on their laurels since dropping one of the year’s sleeper hits – alongside an US and their current European tour, they’ve taken the time to record a lovely little performance video for the track “Primordial“.
I highlighted this song in my review of Language, and watching Robby Baca’s gorgeously-plucked strings during the opening passages, I’m reminded yet again of the seminal Jeff Buckley, and in particular “Mojo Pin“; the guitar tone is dauntingly good, and you get a long, good look at what everyone’s doing, which is great.
One of my favourite progressive metal vocalists at the moment, Michael Lessard’s technique is particularly interesting. He barely opens his mouth whilst crooning the song’s soothing lyrics, but it’s evocative nonetheless; he’s clear in his pronunciation and powerful in harsher moments too. He can do it all live too, which is always a bonus.
The Contortionist are currently supporting Protest The Hero, along with The Safety Fire and Destrage, across Europe. Not so many dates left, so grab a ticket and get involved! We saw them earlier this week in London, and it was totally rad.
