Get Involved with Get Involved!, featuring ex-members of Glassjaw, Thursday and From Autumn To Ashes
I’m going to a gig tomorrow. I’m actually mostly going for the support act – Monolith favourites Zoax, who I have managed to miss a few times recently – but the headliner certainly sound interesting.
They’re called Get Involved!, and feature a few familiar faces from some mostly defunct 2000s post-hardcore bands. It’s a pretty great pedigree: Todd Weinstock, who was Glassjaw‘s ‘other’ guitarist until 2004, plays guitar along with From Autumn To Ashes‘ Brian Deneeve, with Tucker Rule of Thursday fame also on drums. Vocalist Derrick Karg and bassist Marcus Russell Price round out the quintet.
So, an interesting prospect then. The band released their debut EP Silk Cuts earlier this month – which was produced by the legendary Ross Robinson, who worked on both the Glassjaw albums Weinstock was involved in – which none of us have actually heard yet, but it’s another triumph for crowdfunding, after the group raised a little of $19,000 last April.
Last week the group released a new video for the track “Let Your Guard Down.” Peep it:
You can really hear the members’ influences showing through; the guitar lines are scratchy and distorted and the energy palpable. I’m not overly sold on Karg’s voice at the moment, but there’s certainly something special about it. Its tone and cadence are often at odds with the music; whilst the more ‘standard’ post-hardcore vocals are in line with what you might expect – there are elements of Fugazi‘s Ian MacKaye to it – the Peter Steele worship is strong, and it takes some getting used to.
If you’re around London tomorrow, head down to the Old Blue Last – it’s free – and we’ll see you there!
