LARPing and nerd victory in Mastodon’s “High Road”

Mastodon - High Road screen shot

Do you guys remember the video Protest The Hero put out in September last year for “Clarity, in which set of opposing Star Trek and Star Wars fans fought it out in costume?

What we have with Mastodon‘s new video is essentially a similar premise: people dressing up and fighting but not really. The twist here is that there’s a bit of a story: a young nerd – a lover of fantasy and his grandma – takes the necessary steps to defeat some bullies at his local LARPing group.

So, instead of lightsabers and phasers, here we have battleaxes and armour. It’s a pretty cool video actually; why don’t you check it out?

We have heard the song before – “High Road” ‘leaked’ a few weeks back, and was subsequently followed by Chimes At Midnight more recently, so this is more about the video itself. Mastodon put the call out for LARPers – or Live Action Role Players – last month to get this filmed, so pretty much all of the participants you see are the real deal:

“We are looking for both eccentric character actors and real-life Live Action Role Playing enthusiasts. We are looking for elves, orcs, wizards, rangers, mages, knights! Experience with LARP combat a huge plus. Preferably 18+. Come in your own LARPer costumes or Mastodon themed LARPer costumes!”

Something interesting: Mastodon are apparently accepting Bitcoin as currency for their new album. I’m not sure if anyone else has done this – at least not anyone as high profile? – so that’s kind of cool.

The eleven track beast that is Once More ‘Round The Sun will be out in a couple of weeks on June 24th through Reprise Records. Mastodon are currently on tour all over the shop, with an appearance at Bonnaroo in Tennessee surrounded by European dates through June and July, and some further September festival performances.
