Voivod target Earth with their new music video

Legendary Canadian space-thrash band Voivod gained quite a following in the 80s and 90s, utilizing unique angular jagged riffs and science fiction themes to great effect in their music. After original guitarist and founding member Denis ‘Piggy’ D’Amour died in 2005, the band ceased releasing album (aside from a couple made up of leftovers from when Piggy was alive). They recruited fellow French-Canadian guitarist Daniel Mongrain (also of Martyr) as a replacement in 2008, and this winter released the first Voivod album without Piggy, named Target Earth. It was generally well received, and it was acknowledged that Mongrain was the perfect replacement for the legendary Piggy.

A few months later, the band have released a music video for the album’s title track. The song is really good; definitely one of the best tracks from the album, with its snarling punk-like attitude and jagged edged guitars. I also had the fortune of seeing the band perform this song live last summer in Montreal, and I thought it was fantastic then too.

The video is entirely computer animated, featuring the band as rough droids, and vocalist Snake is, surprise surprise, half snake, performing in a white room. There is also a legless, levitating droid sitting at some sort of console, a bird with what seems to be a top hat, some weird thin skeletal creatures, and mechanical arms reaching out of the ground around a sphere of some sort. It is the exact kind of odd that one would expect from this band. Visually, it’s fairly subdued, relying more on the strange sci-fi story unfolding than on stunning images. That isn’t to say it looks bad; on the contrary, it looks quite excellent.

This reminds me a bit of the music video that was done for Porcupine Tree’s “Bonnie the Cat” a few years ago. Similar visual style, and a similar odd sci-fi tone.

Voivod currently have three festival dates booked for three consecutive days in three different European countries next month - Brutal Assault XVIII, Bloodstock and Jalometalli. Good luck with that guys!
