Steve Von Till unveils title track for new album
Perhaps better known for his work with super sombre post-metal band Neurosis, Steve Von Till has a list of accomplishments longer than his already impressive beard. Aside from the twelve records he’s released with as a part of that group, he has two as Harvestman, seven with Tribes Of Neurot, and a full three solo albums.
May will see him release his fourth, A Life Unto Itself, and if you’re at all familiar with his work, you’ll be bristling at the thought – in fact I’ve been listening to his last, 2013′s As The Crow Flies, in celebration. He has one of the most delicious, bassy voices I’ve ever heard and can convey so much emotion and gravitas it’s unreal. His solo albums are works of slow-burning melancholy, with instrumentation rarely straying outside of slow-plucked acoustic guitar and strings. It’s a stripped-back affair, and this will be no different.
He’s joined on this new venture by North American composer Eyvind Kang on viola, percussionist Pat Schowe, and Jason “J.” Kardong on pedal steel guitar, and this week released the album’s title track via The Quietus by way of teaser. Have a listen:
Speaking of the venture, Steve said:
When you make a big life decision and then you hear a raven’s call out in the sky, it wasn’t chance – it was an affirmation, it was meant for you, even if that might seem ridiculous in a conventional sense. When you hear a melody and it takes you back a thousand years to a memory you’re not even sure you were a part of. When folklore and history become ways of how you see the world, it allows things to become more mystical and take on deeper meaning. When you’re walking through ordinary, mundane situations, you have this frame of reference that takes on great personal significance beyond surviving the day-to-day: it’s surviving the day-to-day with meaning.
