Jailhouse rock from Eyehategod/Neurosis/Yakuza/ex-Nachtmystium supergroup Corrections House

A mix of intimidatingly impressive musicality, experimental ‘supergroup’ Corrections House reared their heads earlier this year with a project slated to span the experimental, spoken word and acoustic genres, as well as a tantalising “end times collaboration.”
What makes this collaboration quite exciting is that the four members are perfectly poised to pull this off with more than a little aplomb. Featuring Neurosis‘ Scott Kelly, Eyehategod‘s Mike ‘IX’ Williams, Bruce Lamont of veteran avante-garde Chicagoans Yakuza, and Nachtmystium‘s ex-keyboard/synth player Sanford Parker (who is currently part of Illinoisan doom metal band Minsk), and you have a really potent combo going on.
The group raised their heads in early 2013 with the Hoax the System 7″, a 2-track release of insistent, schizophrenic doom that was pretty interesting; quite drum heavy, and there was a video that was pretty cool too:
I’m not sure if that fills the spoken-word quota of the mission statement, as the words felt like poetry spoken over music, rather than traditional vocals (harsh in register as they were), but the group are back with what is undoubtedly the acoustic section, premiering the song “Run Through The Night” through the German arm of Noisey.
The group’s members have seemed to share vocals (Williams in particular being renowned), but Scott Kelly’s voice here is unmistakable; full of that kind of old cowboy feel that permeates his work, be it Neurosis or his excellent solo output, which is similar in feel to ”Run Through The Night“.
Whistful foreboding is the order of the day here; an old Western-style trumpet passage overlays a simple chord progression, with Kelly singing about ”chasing storms underneath the moonlight”. It’s got pace, but feels like a slow-burner, which is odd. The song doesn’t go anywhere definite, and feels a bit like a long interlude, but it’s pretty good.
It’s to be on a full debut called Last City Zero, which is due out in October on Neurot Recordings.
