Devil Sold His Soul return with new vocalist and new track: “Time”
The track, entitled “Time” – and attached to one of my favourite pieces of artwork of the year – is the first recorded material we’ve heard from the band since former vocalist Ed Gibbs departed the group in March, and as such is also the first with new frontman Paul Green, who fans of tech-metal band The Arusha Accord will also recognise.
Paul has of course been seen live by fans already – as Simon pointed out in his review of the band’s set at ArcTanGent festival last month – but for those of us unlucky to catch them as yet, “Time” was premiered on last night’s Radio 1 Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter, which you can catch here (song at 18:45ish).
They also released a lyric video for the track today, which is below – and there’s also a free download available at that swanky website of theirs here!
I’m intrigued by it. Ed’s voice was very distinctive to me, and was key to the DSHS sound, but some of Paul’s vocal patterns aren’t too far removed from his predecessor’s.
In keeping with last year’s Empire Of Light, the tone is quite vibrant – quite positive and triumphant – which is actually the opposite of what I love about the band, whose 2007 effort A Fragile Hope was dark as fuck, but I still really like this. It lacks the hooks of songs like “The Disappointment” or “Sirens Chant“, but the band always have more than an anthem or two on their records, so you can expect the forthcoming new album – due out sometime early next year – to have plenty.
Don’t forget that the band are embarking on the No Remorse, No Regrets headlining European tour with German deathcore band We Butter The Bread With Butter and Woking outfit Palm Reader. Dates on the poster below!
