Dream Theater unveil first new track since 2011!
I have said it before and I’ll say it again; Dream Theater are my favourite band. Some of you may scoff, but that’s okay because Ican’t hear you over the awesomeness that is Scenes From A Memory. Their new self-titled album will be released to the world inSeptember, and on August 5th, an advance single was made available to listen. You can imagine my rage, however, when I found out that the stream was available for US residents only. What the fuck, guys? You have fans everywhere, not just America! Luckily, some kind-hearted person uploaded the song to YouTube almost right away, so I was able to hear it anyways.
The new track is titled “The Enemy Inside”. In my opinion, it is a pretty good song. Not the best the band has offered, but not terrible either. It is a much more unrelenting song than the last couple advance singles from the previous couple of albums. YouTube makes the mix sound worse than it probably is, but otherwise it is pretty good. John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess never fail to impress, and Mike Mangini sounds damn good in his first album writing his own drums parts for the band. James Labrie is definitely starting to show signs of aging, but he can still hold down the vocals well enough. There is one pre-verse rhythm pattern that is horribly generic, but it doesn’t last too long.
I have noticed that the singles the band release tend to be the less interesting songs on the album, so I won’t judge too much from this alone. This song isn’t bad, but it hopefully isn’t a good indication of the album as a whole.
Dream Theater will be released on September 24th on Roadrunner Records
