Fates Warning release a new song from their impending album

Fates Warning darkness

We detailed the upcoming new album from progressive metal giants Fates Warning a few weeks ago. It’ll be the American band’s first new album since 2004’s FWX. The new album will see release on September 27th and is titled Darkness in a Different Light. We were given the rather striking artwork as well as the release date, and now we have been gifted with a new song. It debuted on the twenty fifth episode of The Eleventh Hour podcast, each episode of which runs about an hour of prog related music.

The new tune is named “Into the Black” and, if I may be so bold, it kicks ass. It has everything you could want from a modern Fates Warning song; sweet riffs, awesome melodies, amazing drumming courtesy of the mighty Bobby Jarzombek, and Ray Alder still sounding damn fine on vocals. The guitar solo is fucking amazing, and I absolutely love the chorus, due to its dark and melodic nature. The arrangement is nice too, with keyboards, guitars, and drums all interweaving really nicely. Clean and distorted guitar tones sound wonderful, and the tone for the guitar solo is magnificent. It bodes quite well for the album, as well as for the tour which I really hope to see them on. Fates Warning do not fuck around and are still clearly kings of prog metal.

This year continues to be amazing for prog, what with new Fates Warning, as well as Queensryche, Steven Wilson, Riverside, Orphaned Land, Haken, Leprous, Dream Theater, Ayreon, and Psychotic Waltz. My year end list will be swamped in the stuff, I’m telling you! (Side note: holy fuck, a new Psychotic Waltz album!)

Go here to stream the new song, which you’ll find at the 26:30 mark of the podcast, and watch out for their tour, the European leg of which starts in October, and the North American leg which begins in November.

What do you guys think? Are you excited about the new Fate’s Warning? Do you agree that it has been a good year for progressive metal? What’s been your favourite release? Sound off in the comments!
