Periphery debut first new song from Juggernaut: Alpha

Periphery - Juggernaut Alpha album art

Periphery sure are keeping themselves in the headlines at the moment, aren’t they?

It was only last week that the long-awaited concept album Juggernaut was given a release date, and revealed to be a double album. North American and European tours have been announced, and earlier this week we were given the album art and tracklist.

But this is what you all wanted really, wasn’t it? New music. Here’s “The Scourge“, which is track 5 from Juggernaut: Alpha:

Reaction so far has been mixed. As it’s a mid-album track, we can surmise that the low-key nature of the opening means this will likely come after some kind of barnstorming riff-fest – perhaps track 4, “The Event“, is aptly titled – so it doesn’t feel very Periphery-y to some.

I love it though. The band’s assertion that Juggernaut will be a much darker record certainly shines through, and with so much room for maneuver across the 17 tracks of both albums, it should be no surprise that there will be more than a little experimentation. Spencer’s really allowed to let loose on the vocals, and the section about 1:20 in where he breaks into growls, in conjunction with some double-kick drumming, sounds really menacing. It’s a menacing track. Be scared.

Juggernaut: Alpha and Juggernaut: Omega will be released January 23rd in Australia via Roadrunner Records, on January 26th in Europe/UK via Century Media Records, and through Sumerian Records/Distort/TripleVision Entertainment in the USA, Canada and Japan on January 27th.

They’re touring North America early next year with Nothing MoreWovenwar and Thank You Scientist - dates below – followed by a European stint with Devin Townsend, as well as a special show in London next April.
