Skeletonwitch’s forthcoming album Serpents Unleashed is sounding like a doozy already
The mighty Skeletonwitch, hailing from Athens, Ohio, are preparing to unleash their fifth full length album upon the unsuspecting world. Their last album, 2011′s Forever Abomination, was a full onslaught, and 2009′s Breathing the Fire was a near perfect offering of blackened thrash metal. Their new album, to be released on Prosthetic Records, will be titled Serpents Unleashed. To that end, the band recently debuted the first single from the album, a nice little number called “Burned From Bone“. The video shows the band tracking the song, which is cool. I always liked seeing the behind-the-scenes studio footage from bands, it gives a neat little snippet into their process.
The song is trademark Skeletonwitch; it features white hot riffing, kickass melodies and guitar harmonies, and some seriously molten vocal work from vocalist Chance Garnette. The guitars, courtesy of Scott Hedrick and Nate Garnette, sound vicious and unrelenting, and yet this feels like an evolution for the band. The riff and melodic composition add an almost grand flavour to the music, and I can’t forget to mention the excellent guitar solo, which is actually almost bluesy.
The song is short, clocking in at just under 3 minutes, and it illustrates that this band they never overstay their welcome with any filler. They give you sheer fire in 3 to 4 minute packets, which is refreshing in a day and age where having 10 minute long songs seems to be more and more popular.
Pre-orders are available now at the band’s website, in a large variety of formats and bundles, including, wait for it, cassette tape. I didn’t know anyone aside from ultra-obscure black metal bands did that anymore. Not many people still have cassette players. I do, and I even have a couple of tapes, but it is certainly not very common these days.
Serpents Unleashed will be uh…unleashed on Prosthetic Records on October 29th in North America and the 28th in Europe.
