Post-hardcore band Touché Amoré release new track “Just Exist”

Touche Amore

Deathwish Inc. have been busy defying their namesake as of late. The label imprint headed up by Converge frontman Jacob Bannon has been responsible for releasing some of the most cathartic and positive hardcore in recent memory, and seem set to continue that with the latest release from post hardcore veterans Touche Amore.

Preparing to release their second Deathwish album, Is Survived By, Touche Amore have just released a new song titled simply “Just Exist“. It’s a howling anthem, focused on our mortality and fraught with anxiety over how we will be remembered when we pass. While that may sound like it’s probably a rather depressing song, in actuality it sticks closely to its namesake. It just exists, and avoids any cheap morbidity that another, lesser band may have exposed when talking about a similar subject.

Musically the song continues their post hardcore template of pleasant, intricate guitars and driving percussive rhythms holding aloft the voice of Jeremy Bolm, whose vocals are fraught with anxiety at the uncertainty of the future. His discomfort translates into a song that is both powerful and weirdly uplifting, as he avoids the more trite areas of the subject and instead bears his soul in a barrage of honesty.

Existential crises are hard for anyone to deal with, or even fully comprehend, and most of us out there will often question why we even bother continuing with certain things in our lives. I know I do. “To err is to human…so just…errrrr!” as a recent film I love said (no spoilers for our American friends!). Ultimately Bolm and company hit the nail on the head here. There is no one true answer, instead we must “just exist”, and try and enjoy it.

Is Survived By marks the return of Touche Amore, but with a more streamlined and sharpened sound, thanks to the contributions of producer Brad Wood (Sunny Day Real Estate, Smashing Pumpkins), and yet they don’t sacrifice any of the introspective ferocity that they have become renowned for.

Is Survived By will be released on 24th via Deathwish Inc.

What do you guys think? Does this move you at all? Do you have an answer? Are you a fan of Touche Amore’s work?
