Dream Theater’s self-titled album begins to take shape

Progressive metal pioneers Dream Theater have unveiled the tracklisting and the artwork for their upcoming self-titled 12th studio album. The artwork, featured above, brings to mind the classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Considering Dream Theater used part of the soundtrack from that movie as an introduction for their live shows back on tour in 2008, that isn’t a huge surprise.

The album will have nine tracks, two of which appear to be lengthier fares, which is where Dream Theater tends to shine brightest. According to guitarist John Petrucci, it is a full exploration of the range of sounds Dream Theater has displayed, calling it cinematic, epic, and atmospheric.

01. False Awakening Suite
i. Sleep Paralysis
ii. Night Terrors
iii. Lucid Dream
02. The Enemy Inside
03. The Looking Glass
04. Enigma Machine
05. The Bigger Picture
06. Behind The Veil
07. Surrender To Reason
08. Along For The Ride
09. Illumination Theory
i. Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire
ii. Live, Die, Kill
iii. The Embracing Circle
iv. The Pursuit of Truth
v. Surrender, Trust & Passion

Dream Theater was recorded at Cove City Studio in Long Island, USA, and was produced by guitarist John Petrucci, and the engineering and mixing has been done by Richard Chycki. It is also their second album to feature drummer Mike Mangini, but only the first to feature him as a part of the writing process, as last time he was simply adding his touch to parts written by Petrucci.

John Petrucci, in regards to Mangini’s drumming, has said that people are going to be “pretty freaked out. [...] I feel like now he’s just Mike Mangini unleashed. It’s all him. It’s all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy’s an animal.”

So, in other words, this is definitely an album to look forward to. Mangini is a fantastic drummer, easily capable of some amazing feats, so to hear his personal style added as part of the writing process should be quite intriguing. I am definitely looking forward to it.

Dream Theater will be released September 24th on Roadrunner Records, and the band will do tours of Europe and North America in 2014.
