Fates Warning shed new light on their next upcoming album Darkness in a Different Light
Legendary American pioneers of progressive metal Fates Warning, are returning to release a new studio album after nearly nine years of silence. Their last album FWX was released in 2004. Yesterday, the band announced and revealed cover artwork for their next release, which will hit stores on September 30th 2013.
The album will be titled Darkness in a Different Light, and according to frontman Ray Alder, it is the result of two years of hard work on the band’s part. He also goes on to say that this current lineup is the best that the band has ever had, which includes drum virtuoso Bobby Jarzombek on skins. I tend to agree with him, especially given that, in 2011, the band recorded an album under the name Arch/Matheos with original Fates singer John Arch instead of Alder, and that album turned out to be a masterpiece. FWX was also met with generally positive reviews, though that was nine years ago, so maybe it can’t be used to judge Darkness.
The artwork for the new album, featured above, is simple, probably the most minimal the band has come up with, but I like it. It evokes a strangely peaceful feeling and may not be too exciting, but then there is the band’s name and suddenly it just feels right.
I can’t say I am all that familiar with the band’s more recent works, but I do know that their early works such as Awaken the Guardian, The Spectre Within, No Exit, and Parallels are excellent quality releases. I will have to become more familiar with their newer output, especially since the band are touring extensively in the fall and winter, and I plan on seeing them live in Seattle. If you are a fan of any style of prog metal at all, you’ll see them at the nearest possible date as well. Tour dates are listed here.
Here are some of my favourites Fates tunes to whet your prog appetite.
