Anathema - Universal DVD

Holy crap, if you haven’t got a whiff of British progressive rock band Anathema yet, you really need to sort your life out. As you may have gleaned from its multiple entries in our 2012 best-of lists, their latest album Weather Systems is an absolute triumph of emotion and musicality, and it has made more than one of us shed a tear at its beauty. We are big softies, of course, but still.

They’ve been busy touring the record over the last year, and as part of that, they’ve been recording various sets along the way for a Blu-ray. Specifically, they kicked off the tour in the ancient Roman theatre of Philippopolis, where they were joined by the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra, and that performance makes up the main act of the film – which was directed by acclaimed photographer/filmmaker Lasse Hoile (who has previously worked with the likes of Porcupine Tree and Opeth).

Here’s how the setlist went down, plus an extra set at London’s enchanting Union Chapel for the limited edition version:

The film is out now as a four disc audio-visual set, capturing the magic of the evening on Blu-ray, DVD and two CDs. A two disc (CD & DVD) set and a Blu-ray edition will also be available.

The band are still on tour, currently in North America with Mamiffer. There are a few dates left on that; check ‘em out if you can.
