Yeah, I know; you don’t pronounce the ‘o’!

As far as gloomy music to listen to in the depths of winter goes, you can’t go wrong with a bit of SunnO))). Seattle’s own doom-merchants have cut a consistent career for themselves over the past fourteen years – as far as what is not a full-time project for either of the core members can be, at any rate. Their last album, 2009′s aptly named (for us) Monoliths & Dimensions was very well received, getting an average of 88% on Metacritic.

It’s hardly surprising. Stephen O’Malley has been involved with numerous other bands, including the excellent Khanate and Burning Witch, whilst Greg Anderson has notably played guitar for doom outfit Goatsnake for sixteen years, since the band’s formation in 1996. Together they also formed the renowned Southern Lord Records, and have been in enough doom and drone bands to safely say that they know their shit. Intimately.

Closing the history lesson, it’s been announced today that SunnO))) are heading out for a select number of west coast U.S. dates this December, taking the sonically opposing grindcore band Dead in the Dirt and instrumental outfit Loincloth with them.

One of the dates – on December 20th, and aptly on the date of the Mayan-’predicted’ apocalypse – Southern Lord are putting on one of their famous Power of the Riff mini-festivals at LA’s Fonda Theatre, which will also feature the spectacular Black Breath (look out for their LP Sentenced To Life on more than one year-end list), as well as other big names like High on Fire, Corrosion of Conformity and Void Ov Voices.

Dates are to be found in the event calendar!

In the meantime, here’s “Alice“, the closing track from Monoliths & Dimensions:
