ORBS’ follow-up to Asleep Next To Science to be expected this year?
We were pretty dern excited to learn that writing for the sophomore album from progressive space-rock supergroup OBRS is will underway, with the band posting a video this weekend documenting their country-spanning writing sessions. You may recall us discussed them late last year in our Top 10 Superbands article,
The band was formed in 2007 when Dan Briggs, bassist of Between The Buried And Me, began collaborating with Ashley Ellyllon, ex-Abigail Williams and Cradle of Filth, a seasoned pianist and keyboard player. The project recruited members of Fear Before (The March Of Flames) in the form of guitarist/vocalist Adam Fisher and drummer Clayton Holyoak, as well as bassist Chuck Johnson of Torch Runner, and put out Asleep Next To Science through Equal Vision in 2010.
Asleep was a fantastic album, brimming with narrative and substance, and explored subjects such as crazy scientists, a picnic with bears that blossoms into a rhetoric about fearing what we don’t understand, and the epic pitched-battle narrative “People Will Read Again“, in which a bunch of kids fight each other in similar fashion to that visualised in the video for Sigur Rós’ ”Hoppípolla“.
The video sees Briggs and Ellyllon back writing at the latter’s home in Los Angeles, and most likely took place over the winter months, as the former is now back on tour with BtBaM (and whom we’ll have an interview published later this week!) as part of their run with Coheed and Cambria and Russian Circles. Normally a master of the bass, he has guitar duties in ORBS, and it’s great to see another side of a fantastically talented musician and composer.
Fisher also joins them, adding a preview of his highly unique vocals, and it’s got us all very moist in our stony crevices down here, so we can’t wait for ORBS to make an official announcement regarding release date – the sooner the better!
Check our ORBS on Facebook for all future updates, and make sure to give their work a lsiten if you’re not already familiar!
