Enter “The Hive” with Revocation!
Revocation are back! The Bostonian tech-death voyagers are gearing up for the release of their fifth album in exactly seven weeks time, and to get the ball rolling they’ve released a track called “The Hive“.
The album’s going to be self-titled – hey, there’s a lot of that going around at the moment – and will be the group’s fifth release since they were founded at the turn of the millennium by high-schoolers David Davidson, Anthony Buda and Phil Dubois-Coyne.
It’s become clear in the thirteen-odd years since that Revocation are a force to be reckoned with – Davidson is a very highly-regarded guitarist (he was named the best modern metal guitarist in a Metalsuck staff poll a couple of years ago), and despite parting ways with bassist/vocalist Buda last year, they replaced him in fine fashion with former East Of The Wall bass player Brett Bamberger

Not bad at all, huh? Of course, there’s all the pre-order bundles and special items being advertised in the video, but you don’t really have to watch it. The meat of the song is true Revocation; it’s fucking fast. Thrashy and thunderous, with those quinessential death metal vocals, the band seem destined to continue bending minds – especially with how Davidson manages to handle both musical duties he performs.
The solo towards the end is a particular highlight – I’m not often a fan of solos in metal, but this one is classy – and it’s all underpinned by a fairly simple but beautifully executed winding, repeating riff pattern. Good stuff, and we’re looking forward to more!
Revocation will be out August 6th through Relapse Records. The band are heading out on this year’s Summer Slaughter with The Dillinger Escape Plan (if they get a live replacement for the injured Ben Weinman), Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, The Ocean, Aeon, Rings Of Saturn and Thy Art Is Murder.
