Ever seen Spock’s Beard? It’s Something Very Strange…
LA prog rock band Spock’s Beard have premiered a new song from their upcoming album Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep. It will be their eleventh studio album since their formation in 1992, and their first album with new vocalist Ted Leonard. Spock’s Beard play a style of prog rock influenced by classics Yes and Genesis, but with a few more pop leanings. They are also known for intricate many-layered vocal harmonies as counterpoint vocals.
The new song is called “Something Very Strange”, and is an edited version of the album cut. It’s a brooding affair, with a very science-fiction sound; reminiscent of something Arjen Lucassen of Ayreon might compose. Vocoder effects in some parts lend even more of a robotic, futuristic feel to it, and lyrically it deals with aliens appearing in the sky and the people on Earth facing what is coming to them. The musicianship is wonderful; the drumming and bass parts delightful; and the overall atmosphere of the piece perfectly captures what aliens invading would seem like. It should also be noted that Leonard acquits himself very well as the new vocalist, sounding an excellent fit for the band.
The only real issue with the song is that the edit seems to end rather quickly. One has to imagine that the full album version will be even more enjoyable.

The new album will feature two songs co-written by former vocalist, and prog musician extraordinaire, Neal Morse, and will be released on InsideOut Records on March 25th. A special audio buff-friendly limited edition download with 96k/24-bit audio files is available from their Bandcamp page here, which includes the main ‘disc’ and bonus as well, including one track that isn’t available anywhere else.
