Expain cover John Lennon’s classic song
Any given city’s local metal scene is definitely one of the best places to find great music. The shows are far more intimate as the members tend to have a much more personal rapport with the audience members. I come from Vancouver, where we have a pretty large local scene of many great bands, and it is fairly easy on any given weekend to have upwards of three awesome shows to choose from. On this past Saturday night I had the fortune to bear witness to the death metal band known as Expain (formerly The Almighty Excruciating Pain), for whom a friend of mine is now the drummer. They played at a metal bar, and their show utterly leveled the place. I was left in awe of their performance, but especially at a fantastic cover song they pulled out.
What song was that, you ask? They covered John Lennon’s magnum opus, “Imagine”. A technical death metal cover of “Imagine”, and it sounded fantastic. I wish I could share it with you, Dear Reader.
Oh wait – I can, because they released a video for their cover of it about a week ago. I won’t even try to describe it to you, because I don’t want to spoil how great this is. They don’t quite have the same ferocity as the live version, but that’s normal. What mostly amazes me is how straight faced and nonchalant they are while doing it.
The rest of their show was equally as fiery. They’re in the process of recording an album, so hopefully we can hear some studio tracks from them soon. In the meantime, I’ll keep going to their shows (there’s a free one next weekend, if you’re in Vancouver, check it out)
