Marvel has selected the new actor to play The Man Without Fear

Earlier this week we received some rather disappointing news from behind the scenes of one of Marvel‘s upcoming Netflix series in the form of Drew Goddard being replaced as showrunner of Daredevil, due to time restraints and his prior commitments to Sony‘s upcoming Sinister Six film. However, he will be replaced by the capable hands of another Joss Whedon alumni, Steven S. DeKnight, of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Spartacus fame. Goddard will remain as an executive producer on the show, and the first two episodes are written by him, so his presence will still be felt.

While that is all well and good, it seems that Marvel are trying to re-route the questionable publicity they have been receiving from the loss of two directors (Edgar Wright departed from the upcoming Ant Man feature film after being attached to the property for nearly a decade earlier this week) by announcing their new lead for the Daredevil franchise, and luckily, it seems like the Man Without Fear will be in good hands.

Marvel has confirmed that Boardwalk Empire‘s Charlie Cox will be donning the red cowl and legal attire for the planned 2015 series. Cox may be a rather unknown actor for the masses, but those who have seen him in his few widely known roles can attest to his talent and versatility. Cox is most well known for starring in the 2007 adaptation of Neil Gaiman‘s Stardust, directed by Matthew Vaughn, as well as appearing in numerous episodes of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

Cox has also appeared in a plethora of other small roles, but unfortunately nothing too remarkable. With that in mind, Daredevil could be quite the big break for the thirty-two year old Briton. And with the intricacies needed for a role such as Daredevil/Matt Murdock, it seems unlikely that Marvel would choose anyone who was not strong at conveying a wide range of deep, character-defining emotions. So here is one Daredevil fanatic who is extremely happy about this casting.

Marvel have also released the following short synopsis for the show:

Marvel is proud to announce that acclaimed actor Charlie Cox has joined “Marvel’s Daredevil,” an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015. Best known for his acclaimed work in “Boardwalk Empire” and “Stardust,” Cox will play Matt Murdock, the lead role in this all-new Marvel Television series. Blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, Matt Murdock fights against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” “Angel”) and Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost,” “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer,” in addition to writing the first two episodes of “Marvel’s Daredevil”), along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Smallville,” “Heroes”).

“Marvel’s Daredevil” is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios.

Daredevil will be the first of five joint productions between Marvel and Netflix that will eventually culminate in a big crossover special of The Defenders (the others being series based on Jessica Jones, Power Man, and Iron Fist). Daredevil is expected to start production in July of this year, and be ready to air by mid 2015. The Heroes of Hell’s Kitchen are coming. Get ready!
