This is your Senior Features Writer, Sigma. I figured it would be good for you guys to have some insight as to who I am outside of the Monolith and what brought me here.
I’m a recent graduate of DePaul University, which is based in Chicago. While many of my friends went to other schools to become engineers or doctors, I put my parent’s money to better use by majoring in Computer Games Development, which is just a fancy way of saying I went to school to learn how to make video games. I always feel like a small kid responding to a “What do you want to be when you grow up?” kind of question when I say that. Have I refused to grow up and become a real adult? You be the judge, I won’t be offended. But for real, games have always been a huge passion of mine. My pseudonym and avatar should be further evidence of this; if anyone ever wants to geek/nerd out and chit chat with me about old school or current games, definitely hit me up. Games aren’t all I geek out on, however: I also grew up loving sports, particularly football (as in NFL football, not soccer), and although the teams are becoming disgustingly stacked as the years go on, I also enjoy watching NBA basketball.
I have another pretty big obsession and I know this may come out of left field to many of you but bare with me. I’m a pretty avid metalhead. I kid you not. Metal was the first genre of music that I really felt passionate about and continue to do so. My tastes tend to lean toward progressive metal or metalcore – and whatever may fall in between – but don’t hold that against me. Whilst I have my preferences, I enjoying leaving my comfort zone to experience different tunes. It may be Dream Theater one day, Agalloch another day, and Death another. I try to keep an even balance.
So how did I end up here at the Monolith? In college I ran a blog that was in support of a metal radio show I had at our student-run station. That area of the world wide web (when was the last time you heard that?) is known as Brutalitopia. With the help of two other fellow Monolith staff members, Brutalitopia (Django and Durf Diggler – you’ll meet them later!) ended up being a fun little project we did in our spare time. When we received an offer to join the Monolith, however, we realized we could make a greater impact on the community by being a part of something much bigger. That and, as you all know I’m sure, to deny the Iron Council is to court death, so our hand was forced.
My role within this whole scene will be primarily writing features, so coming up with topics that will spark fun discussion amongst you Acolytes will be my main gig. I do, however, also expect to be very involved with the podcasts we plan to release. Along with my fellow Brutalitopians, all of whom have some radio experience, I can assure you that you won’t want to miss out on those podcasts.
Whatever happens along the way, I want to hear back from you guys! If you have any ideas that you think would be cool for an article or a podcast, concerns about how much my writing sucks, video game/sports queries, or random nonsensical anecdotes please don’t hesitate to send them my way. I promise I’m friendly.
Here’s my song of the year thus far, Enslaved‘s “Roots Of The Mountain“:
