Chris Barretto now fronts Monuments!
Since British groovesters Monuments parted ways with vocalist Matt Rose in March, the vacant position has been advertised, and subsequently filled, but the identity of the new vocalist has been kept under wraps – until last night at a sneaky ‘secret’ gig in Croydon, south London.
Under the moniker The Indulgers – a reference to the song “The Indulger“, a new track which was used as the audition song for applicants – Monuments played the entirey of Gnosis – cunningly disguised as Knowledge on the poster with the new dude at the helm, and as soon as the gig was over, it became clear who this guy was – none other than former Periphery, Friend For A Foe, current Ever Forthright, and fill-in The HAARP Machine singer/saxophonist Chris Barretto!
The whole shebang was devious indeed, as the new man was originally slated to be unveiled at tomorrow’s Ghostfest in Leeds, but a now-unavailable video and the fans who made it down have confirmed the identity, and it now cements Monuments as one of the hairiest bands in prog.
[update: a new video of the track “Regenerate” has surfaced here]
It’s immediately clear that Barretto has what it takes in the performance and vocal departments, and he looks like a good fit, but with his merry-go-round of past appointments, it remains to be seen if he’ll stick.
This isn’t the first time he has been on stage with them – when he filled in for The HAARP Machine earlier this year, he got on stage with Monuments – who were part of the same tour with After The Burial – and contributed saxophone parts to “Regenerate“. Whether or not this might become a regular feature of Monuments’ sound, we’ll have to see, but it’s certainly an interesting dimension.
After Ghostfest, Monuments are due to headline UK Tech-Metal Fest’s early-bird Thursday night, and are also due to play a few Russian dates after the summer with TesseracT and Skyharbor.
